Dear Steve,

I'm sorry for being such a source of pain in your life. I thought you should know that I lost the baby. I didn't want you to think I was keeping the child that never was, away from you.

Have a good life,

Tracy

I turned the letter over like there had to be more. There was no return address, no apology! NOTHING! I started breathing hard again. I struggled to catch my breath. I walked away to the opposite end of our office floor where the empty offices were. Where Tracy and I made passionate love once shortly after we resumed our sexcapades. It can't be over! How could she do this to me?

*******

"Ms. Shirley is it true? Did she lose my baby or is she that mad at me that she would lie to me?"

"Shirley, its just Shirley. I'm not that much older than you." She touched my arm. "She says she did. She's been off work, Becca our boss can't share what's going on with her."

"Can't you call her?"

She shrugged, "I don't have her new number yet. I think she's disconnected from everyone." She rubbed my arm, "I can't believe she wrote you a letter and mailed it. I had no idea that Tracy was such a coward. You deserve better than that." Then she opened her arms to hug me. As she released me she put her lips on my neck.

I acted like I didn't notice. "I'm in love with her, I've got to get her back." I meant every word.

"You don't think it may be time to move on?"

"Move on to what?" I was getting mad? "Move on to who? Can't nobody love me like she can! Nobody ever will! I'm alone in the middle of a crowd without her." I stood up, "you don't understand."

People were starting to look at us and she was getting embarrassed. "Steve calm down, I'm here to help you." I sat down, "what's wrong with you? Why are you so tightly wound up?"

I surprised myself with how upset I was about this whole thing. I had to switch gears. "I thought we were going to move in together. I put my notice in, we had a fight. When I go to make up she's gone like a thief in the night. You know how much money I don't make, I've had to move in with my baby momma." I sat back in my chair shaking my head as I looked at the table. "I'm happy to see my daughter every day, but her momma drives me crazy. I need Tracy back. I'm sorry for everything I said. I was freaking out. If she really lost the baby we could try again. I'll do whatever she wants."

"Even marriage?"

"Yes! Whatever it takes!"

Shirley looked disappointed, "but you're so young. Why does everyone have to get married? Tracy may think that's what she wants, but marriage makes anyone rethink life altogether. You've got plenty of time to get married."

"That's what everyone except Tracy and my parents think.
